For the Gravy:
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 cups beef broth

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
For the Bake:
2 cups baby potatoes, halved
1 cup baby carrots
1 tbsp olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)
Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
Mix the hamburger steak ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, egg, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
Shape into patties: Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape into thick hamburger steaks.
Sear the steaks: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the hamburger steaks for 2-3 minutes per side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
Caramelize the onions: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they become golden brown and caramelized, about 10 minutes.
Create the gravy base: Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for 1-2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
Add the broth and seasonings: Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, and salt and pepper to taste.
Simmer until thickened: Bring to a simmer and cook for 3-4 minutes until the gravy thickens slightly. Remove from heat.
- Assemble the Bake:
Prepare the vegetables: In a bowl, toss the halved baby potatoes and baby carrots with 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Layer the casserole: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). In a 9×13-inch baking dish, arrange the seared hamburger steaks evenly. Scatter the seasoned potatoes and carrots around the steaks.
Pour over the gravy: Spoon the caramelized onion gravy over the hamburger steaks and vegetables, making sure everything is coated evenly.
- Bake:
Bake uncovered: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender and the steaks are cooked through.
Optional – Add Parmesan cheese: During the last 10 minutes of baking, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top for a golden, cheesy finish.
- Serve:
Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven and let it rest for 5 minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving
